Commitment

At the evening of life, we shall be judged on our love.

—Saint John of the Cross

One of the defining moments of my religious life occurred when one of my sisters and I had gone out on mission to bring our books and media resources to a chaplain’s conference in the Chicago area. I remember attending the closing Mass, where the key celebrant was the bishop of nearby Gary, Indiana. He shared with us the moving story of how he had had the privilege of taking care of his mother before she died. On her deathbed, his mother looked at his father and asked: “Did I love you enough?” This phrase has stuck with me since then, as it’s a reminder that love needs to be at the heart of all I do. It is not the love of material things that gives me happiness and fulfillment in life, but rather the giving of my life to others in love. This is vital to me, as love is at the heart of why I first became a religious sister and why I want to remain a religious sister until my final breath. I have felt the unconditional love and mercy of God on countless occasions. God has not called me to belong to Him in a life of consecration because I am perfect; He has called me because He has loved me. And coming to that knowledge has compelled me to be committed to love before all in every aspect of my life.

When I made my final vows, I went home to my village cathedral, where I began my catechism classes what feels like ages ago. Returning, I could not believe I was being consecrated forever to God in the very church where I could barely reach the holy water font as a little child. It felt like everything had come full circle—God was serious about calling me to religious life!

I am all in now and I do not want to turn back. I think I have found what my heart had been looking for and have discovered the greatest Love of an amazing God who has called me to Himself as His bride and disciple forever, just as I am. Through my calling as a Daughter of St. Paul, I have found the place where I can bear witness to Christ more personally, especially using the media through the telling of stories, experiences, challenges, relationships, and new learning moments that have colored different stages of my life path. As a Daughter of St. Paul, I feel constantly drawn out of myself to creatively give of myself to God and others in love. I am filled with gratitude and amazement at a simple glance at parts of my life story because God is so tangible. My prayer is that you will discover the same.
